The bunnies are here, the bunnies are here!!! WTS has already had almost 20 baby bunnies!! They are almost a month earlier than last year! These adorable fluff balls are Eastern cottontails. Some of you may remember from last year that baby bunnies, especially ones only a few days old are the hardest animals to keep alive in rehabilitation. Their digestion entirely depends on getting nutrients from their mother which are impossible to replicate. The little scraggly one in the picture here should be chubby and fluffy, but she's scraggly because it is hard to get her enough fat and nutrients and she has formula caked on her face!). But so far she is doing well and hopefully she will eventually fluff out and get chubby once her digestion is better. I've lost a few, but some are doing really well, as seen in the bunny montage below.
This year I changed the formula that i use a little bit and I think that that may be helping...time will tell. Hopefully a few should be ready for release this coming week. yippee!!
I am totally back to the sleep deprived time of rehabilitation, but it is great to have a chance to help all these little ones. A lot have been victims of cats, which reminds me to remind you to keep your pets under your watchful eyes so that they don't harm native wildlife, especially all the babies during this time of year! See http://www.wildthingssanctuary.org/cats-amp-wildlife.html
If you do find babies the mother might well be close by, so don't "kidnap" them! Keep a watch on the nest and see if the mother returns. For more information call WTS: 607 200 4100 or see
